CANTON -- The Malone University men's soccer team was back on their home pitch at King Field on Saturday for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) showdown with Kentucky Wesleyan College.
The Pioneers and Panthers were tied at 1-1 late into the game, but KWC came away with the go-ahead goal in the 74' and held on down the stretch for the 2-1 victory.
THE ESSENTIALS
- Final Score: Kentucky Wesleyan College Panthers 2 - Malone University Pioneers 1
- Records: Kentucky Wesleyan (4-2-1, 1-1-1 G-MAC) | Malone (2-6-0, 0-4-0 G-MAC)
- Location: Canton, Ohio | Pioneer Park - King Field
THE MATCH
The Panthers scored first, nineteen minutes into the match, and despite being outshot by Malone 5-3 in the first half held that 1-0 lead at the break.
Less than five minutes into the second half
Randy Harris came up with a loose ball near the KWC box. He beat the Panthers' keeper solo for the equalizer and his second goal of the season.
Each side had several more strong looks at the go-ahead score, but unfortunately for Malone, KWC earned an indirect kick directly in front of the Pioneer goal in the 79th minute. The Panthers converted on the opportunity to take a 2-1 lead.
Kentucky Wesleyan was able to hang on to that lead the rest of the way to secure the win.
DETAILS
Malone outshot KWC 11-8 on the day. Eight of the Pioneer opportunities were put on frame.
MU's offense did a great job creating opportunities all afternoon long. Malone earned ten corner kicks compared to just five for the Panthers.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Pioneers now face three consecutive matches on the road. First up is a return trip to Kentucky Wesleyan next weekend.
Saturday's kick-off from Owensboro is set for 4:30 p.m. ET.
