Malone Struggles at Home to No. 22 Hillsdale

CANTON -- The current Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) homestand continued for the Malone University volleyball program Friday night as the Pioneers welcomed Hillsdale College to Osborne Hall.

The Chargers entered play as the No. 22 team in the latest AVCA NCAA Division II National Top-25 Poll.

Malone gave Hillsdale everything they could handle in the opening set, but the Chargers ultimately ran away with a 3-0 sweep.

THE MATCH
Set One
Looking to build off of their big win over Walsh Tuesday night, the Pioneers came out of the gate strong.

Malone forced Hillsdale into several errors early, and held a 9-6 advantage after Taylor Small put down her second kill of the game.

The Pioneers continued to lead until Hillsdale rattled off five consecutive points to move ahead 12-10 midway through the set.

The two teams continued to trade points, but Malone was never able to recapture the lead. The Pioneers tied the set once at 18-18, and then again at 19-19, but Hillsdale won six out of the last eight points to pick up the 25-22 win.

Set Two
The second set was all Chargers.

Hillsdale scored the first four points of the set unanswered, and one point led 10-2.

Ultimately 14 kills and a .250 hitting percentage led to Hillsdale winning the set 25-13.

Set Three
The Chargers again got off to a strong start, but this time the Pioneers were able to rally back.

Back-to-back kills by Annika Nichols and Kristen Hankins pulled Malone to within one at 10-9.

Unfortunately the Chargers stretched out their advantage late, and pulled away for the 25-16 win to complete the sweep.

DETAILS
Kristin Hankins and Taylor Small each had five kills for the Pioneers.

Gabby Pelfrey led the team with 14 assists.

Macy McCauley had a team-high 17 digs.
