Pioneers Battle to a 1-1 Draw with Northwood

CANTON -- The Malone University women's soccer team welcomed the newest member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) to King Field on Saturday.

A late equalizer from the Pioneers allowed the game to finish in a 1-1 draw, and earned Malone a point in the conference standings.

THE ESSENTIALS
  • Final Score: Malone University Pioneers 1 - Northwood University Timberwolves 1
  • Records: Malone (1-2-1, 0-1-1 G-MAC) | Northwood (1-1-2, 0-0-1 G-MAC)
  • Location: Canton, Ohio | Pioneer Park - King Field

THE MATCH
The first half was very even on both sides. Each team managed to put three shots on target, but the respective keepers were able to keep the scoreboard clean.

Northwood's final opportunity of the period did actually land in the back of the net, however it was determined time had already expired and the score remained tied 0-0 at halftime.

The Timberwolves outshot Malone 16-4 in the second 45 minutes of the game, however it took until the 81st minute for NU to score the game's first goal.

Less than five minutes later Camryn Emerling sent a cross flying into the box. Makiah Newport redirected the ball with her head into the back of the Northwood goal for the equalizer.

Both defenses held strong over the final five minutes, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.

DETAILS
The Timberwolves outshot the Pioneers 24-11 overall and 10-5 in shots on goal. That resulted in a career-high eight saves for freshman keeper Kassidy Cannon.

The 86th minute goal makes Makiah Newport the fifth different Pioneer to score a goal this season. It was the first score of her collegiate career, and also the first collegiate assist for Camryn Emerling.

WHAT'S NEXT
Malone hits the road for the first time this season. The Pioneers travel to Ohio Dominican University on Wednesday, September 14.

Kick-off from Columbus is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
