CANTON -- Still down a handful of lineup regulars, the Malone University men's soccer team struggled in a physical match against Northwood University.

The Pioneer defense held their own for most of the afternoon, including some amazing saves by Gavyn Ernst, however Northwood's offense proved to be too much in the end. 

Northwood scored one goal in each half in the 2-0 win.

THE MATCH
The match started out being a back and forth battle where both defenses were showing their toughness. Gavyn Ernst had two crucial saves early on to stop any Northwood momentum.

Northwood's relentless attack proved to be too much as they finally found the back of Malone's net in the 31st minute of the match. 

Malone turned it up offensively in the second half, and put the pressure on Northwood's defense. This, however, allowed Northwood to counter attack and score another goal in the 66th minute. 

The Pioneer men turned it up even more, but none of their nine second half shots could find the back of Northwood's net

In the end, Northwood held on for the 2-0 conference win.

Ernst came away with four saves compared to Northwood's three.

Malone had 13 total shots with 3 being on target. 

WHAT'S NEXT
The Pioneers travel to Columbus to play Ohio Dominican University on Wednesday. 

Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
