CANTON – Nicholas Wertz, the Malone University record holder in both the men's 1650 yard-freestyle and the 1000-yard freestyle, has been named the next head coach of the swimming and diving program at the university.
Wertz previously served as an assistant coach for the program during the 2021-22 season.
"I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to return to Malone and coach the sport I love," Wertz stated. "I am excited to get to work this season leading the Pioneers!"
Wertz graduated from Malone in May of 2020 with degrees in both business administration and personal training.
Beyond the two school records, Nick was the G-MAC / MEC champion in the 1650-freestyle in 2020, earning him a spot on the Great Midwest all-conference first team.
In Malone's all-time record book, Wertz also holds top-10 times in seven different individual events and two relays.
"Nick shares a strong commitment to the athletic department's mission and the educational goals we have for our swim and dive student athletes," said Director of Athletics
Tanya Hockman. "He brings a wealth of competitive experience and an eagerness to learn. We expect great things from Nick as a leader, mentor and coach at Malone University."
