Women's Basketball Falls in Mayors’ Cup

NORTH CANTON, Ohio – In the 26th Annual Mayors' Cup on Saturday afternoon, the Malone University women's basketball team lost to crosstown rival Walsh University.

The Pioneers (11-8, 7-6 G-MAC) and the Cavaliers (18-3, 13-2 G-MAC) traded baskets throughout the first half, before Walsh pulled ahead in the second quarter and remained in the lead for the rest of the game to secure the 79-65 win.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Emma Kallas started the afternoon's scoring with a fastbreak layup. Malone and Walsh went back and forth trading baskets.

Back-to-back layups from Kallas put the Pioneers up by four halfway through the first period before the teams went back to matching each other's scores.

Walsh took a 16-14 lead off a layup by Jamie Schmeltz with two minutes to go in the first quarter. Walsh would remain on top for the remainder of the game, even though Malone held it within a possession until the 8:20 mark of the second quarter.

Out of the second quarter media timeout, Alexis Hutchison sank a shot from beyond the arc and sparked a small run as Brooklyn Troyer and Kallas dropped in a layup each to shrink the lead to five.

Walsh took a 39-32 lead to the halftime locker room. Hutchison and Kallas both took 12 points to the halftime locker room while Madison Hunter had pulled down 4 rebounds in the first half.

The Pioneers scored first out of the halftime break on a Hutchison layup. The beginning of the third quarter mirrored the first as the team traded baskets for the first four minutes.

A layup by Nikki Weber was the start of a seven point Pioneer run to finish the third period of play, but still left the Pioneers behind by seven.

The final quarter began again with the teams trading baskets that included layups from Kelsey Swihart and Madison Hunter.

Robin Campbell finished out the game with two free throws, but it wasn't enough to curb the Cavalier offense as the home team finished with the 79-65 victory and the Mayors' Cup trophy.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Alexis Hutchison led the Pioneers with a season-high 24 points as she shot 10-22 from the field and 3-9 from beyond the arc.
  • Emma Kallas added a season-high 16 points after she shot a perfect 8-of-8 from the field. Robin Campbell rounded out the double-digit scorers for Malone.
  • Campbell and Madison Hunter each pulled down seven rebounds.
  • As a team, the Pioneers scored 44 points in the paint and scored 17 points off the 19 turnovers forced on Walsh. Malone slightly outscored Walsh on fastbreak points 14-12 and points off the bench 10-8.
