Pioneers Beat Hillsdale with Second Half Comeback

CANTON – On Thursday evening, the Malone University women's basketball team welcomed Hillsdale College for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup.

The Chargers (11-11, 8-8 GMAC) came out and led for all of the first half, taking a 13 point lead to the halftime locker room. However, the Pioneers (12-8, 8-6 GMAC) came out and outscored the visiting team 48-26 in the second half of action to finish the night with a 71-62 victory.

Tonight's win marks four in a row at home for the Pioneers.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Hillsdale started the evening with a three-point shot from Sydney Mills, but Malone responded with a layup from Emma Kallas.

While the teams a scored a basket, Hillsdale then began to build a small lead on back to back buckets. But the home team kept it close, and the first period ended with a four point lead for the Chargers.

Another layup by Kallas tied the game at 21 a piece with 6:29 in the second quarter. However, any Pioneer momentum from the score was lost as Hillsdale went on a 15-2 run to end the first half, taking a 36-23 lead to the break.

Malone scored first out of the break on another Kallas layup. The teams traded baskets, but Hillsdale reached their largest lead of the night after a pair of free throws from Peighton Nelson.

The Pioneers then gave Hillsdale a taste of their own medicine as Robin Campbell went back to back shots to start a 15-2 run to finish out the third quarter. It brought the Pioneers within four points of Hillsdale headed into the final period as Kyli Horn scored the final points of the quarter.

The momentum continued as Campbell and Madison Hunter scored to tie the game at 46 at the 9:16 mark. The Chargers made one more attempt at a lead with a jumper by Mills, but the Pioneers responded and never looked back.

Campbell scored ten of her 22 total points in the final period while Alexis Hutchison tacked on seven points of her own including the final two points of the game with a pair of free throws.

Malone's offense exploded with 29 points in the fourth quarter for their best scoring quarter of the season.
