Oilers' Offense Too Much for the Pioneers

FINDLAY, Ohio – On Saturday afternoon, the Malone University women's basketball team began their final road trip of the 2021-2022 season with a trip to University of Findlay for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup.

The Pioneers (12-9, 8-7 GMAC) scored first, and the two teams kept it close until the Oilers (10-12, 8-8 GMAC) gained a double-digit lead in the second quarter.

Findlay would take a 15 point lead to the halftime break and continue in the second half to close out the 65-54 win.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Holly Groff started the afternoon's scoring with a three-point shot and Madison Hunter followed with a three-point shot of her own to put Malone up 6-3 halfway through the opening period.

A jumper from Alexis Hutchison at 2:56 in the opening quarter gave the Pioneers their last lead of the game, as Findlay responded with seven points to close out the first quarter.

The second quarter also started with a slow scoring pace for both teams, as Findlay got a good jumper in the opening minute and the next score was a layup by Hunter at the 6:38 mark.

Malone would not score again until three minutes later on another Hunter layup.

Heading into halftime, the teams traded baskets, but it was the Oilers who had expanded their lead to 33-18 when the first half expired.

Findlay came out of the locker room and expanded their lead to 19, their largest lead of the game, after Sydney Kin sank a bucket.

Emma Kallas responded with five of her own unanswered points to start a 15-5 run for the Pioneers. Kallas scored seven of Malone's points in the run to bring the Pioneers within nine of the home team.

To begin the final quarter, Robin Campbell passed to Hutchison who sank a shot from beyond the three-point line. With just over three minutes to play Kallas sank another three-pointer to cut Findlay's lead to eight.

The Oilers regained their double-digit lead as the game ended with the home team up by eleven points.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Madison Hunter came off the bench to lead Pioneer scorers with 14 points. She also pulled down a team-high six total rebounds.
  • Emma Kallas hit double-digit scoring for the third game in a row after she scored all of her 12 points in the second half, when she shot a perfect 5-5 from the field including a three-pointer and sank a shot from the charity stripe.
  • Alexis Hutchison rounded out double-digit scorers with ten points. Robin Campbell was the top defensive force for the Pioneers with a team-high five defensive rebounds and a game-high four steals.
  • Malone forced Findlay into 21 turnovers and converted them into 17 points on the Pioneer end of the court. The Pioneers bench, in part to Hunter's efforts, out scored Findlay's bench 15-10.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The rescheduled match up against Kentucky Wesleyan College on 2/14 has been cancelled, so the Pioneers will hit the court again on Thursday February 17 for their final road game of the season. Tip-off against the Tiffin Dragons is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
