Pioneers Drop Final Road Game to the Dragons

TIFFIN, Ohio – Thursday evening was the final road game for the Malone University women's basketball team as they traveled to Tiffin to face off with the Dragons of Tiffin University.

While the Pioneers (12-10, 8-8 GMAC) led by five early in the first quarter, it was the Dragons that rallied to lead by six points after the first twenty minutes of play.

Malone outscored Tiffin 17-14 in the third quarter to bring the game within a possession, but Tiffin extended their halftime lead to finish the game 64-56 in favor of the home team.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
After the Tiffin scored first, Malone then worked to build their lead with points scored from five different players, beginning with Kelsey Swihart's shot from the paint.

However, Malone's largest lead of the night was quickly cut down as the Dragons responded with nine unanswered points to take a 13-9 lead. Tiffin would remain in control of the lead through the halftime.

Into the second quarter, Malone focused on their offensive under the basket as they scored 12 points in the paint, six coming from the hands of Alexis Hutchison. The Pioneers efforts brought them within a possession of the home team multiple times, but the Dragons took a 30-24 lead into the locker room at the break.

Holly Groff started the third quarter for the Pioneers with a three-point shot at the 9:04 mark. After two free throws from Swihart and another layup from Hutchison, Malone cut the Tiffin lead to a single possession and would keep it that close for the remainder of the period.

Brooklyn Troyer gave the Pioneers the lead again after sinking a shot from beyond the three-point line at the 3:33 mark of the third. The final few minutes of the period saw the teams trade baskets as Hutchison and Groff each got a layup.

The fourth quarter for the Pioneers began with Madison Hunter sinkings a free throw at the 8:17 mark. Robin Campbell would score the next points for Malone with a three-pointer four minutes later followed by a layup from Hunter.

A couple of free throws closed out the game for the Pioneers as they drop their final road game of the regular season to the Dragons 64-56.
