No. 2 Ashland Cruises Past Women’s Basketball

CANTON – Saturday afternoon saw the Malone Pioneers host nationally ranked Ashland University.

Ashland (23-2, 18-1 GMAC) exploded their offense during the second quarter to take a sixteen point lead to the halftime locker room. While the Pioneers (12-11, 8-9 GMAC) tried to work back from the double-digit deficit, but the Eagles proved why they are the top team in G-MAC standings and ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II as they would beat the Pioneers 83-55.

Today's loss is just the third loss for the Pioneers at home this season as they fall to 10-3 in home match ups.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Ashland started the first quarter with an early 7-2 lead, but the Pioneers came back with a layup from Emma Kallas and an old-fashioned three-point play by Holly Groff to tie the game.

The score was tight, and Madison Hunter gave the Pioneers a two point lead with a three-pointer. However, this would be the last lead of the night for the home team, as Ashland began to build a lead, scoring the last ten points of the opening period to give them a 23-15 lead.

Robin Campbell scored at the 7:21 in the second quarter to bring the game within single-digits again, but the Eagles sank two free throws to regain their double-digit lead.

The Ashland free throws started a 12-4 run to finish the first half, only allowing Hunter and Campbell to score for the Pioneers.

After the teams came back to the court after the halftime break, they traded baskets for the first two minutes before Ashland would gain a 20 point advantage over Malone.

Campbell came alive as the third quarter wrapped up, scoring Malone's final seven points of the quarter by herself within the last two minutes, including a three-point shot at the buzzer.

The fourth quarter opened with Ashland scoring six unanswered, but Campbell responded with four of her own unanswered points. With a couple of free throws from freshman Kelsey Swihart and a three-pointer from Brooklyn Troyer, Malone put together a 9-2 run in the middle of the final period.

However, the late run from the home team, still put them behind No. 2 Ashland by 23 points. The Eagles finished the game with a three-pointer from Morgan Yoder to win 83-55.

PIONEER POINTS
  • After only shooting 2-5 from the field in the first half, Robin Campbell went 5-7 from the field in the second half for 13 points and finished the game with 17 points to lead Pioneer scorers. She also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and tied with Holly Groff with four assists each.
  • Alexis Hutchison snatched two steals and a block.
  • As a team, the Pioneers were dominated by Ashland on points scored in the paint 56-30, and points scored off turnovers 23-4. However, Malone did sink more shots from the charity stripe than the Eagles as Malone sank eight compared to Ashland's three.

WHAT'S NEXT
The final week of the regular season will involve three games for the Pioneers, all at home. The first will be on Tuesday February 22nd in a rematch of Thursday's matchup as Tiffin University comes to Osborne for a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
