Malone Wins Crucial Game Over Tiffin

CANTON – Malone University women's basketball team welcomed in Tiffin University on Tuesday evening for a rescheduled game from earlier this season and was a key game for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers (13-11, 9-9 GMAC) and the Dragons (12-14, 9-11 GMAC) were tied after the first quarter, before Malone took a five point lead into the halftime locker room.

It was the Pioneers who were able to retain their lead and win 74-59 and snapped a three-game losing streak.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Tiffin started out the evening with the scoring, but Robin Campbell responded with a three pointer. The Dragons responded with five unanswered points, accounting for their largest lead of the game.

Alexis Hutchison and Holly Groff each put in scores from the paint. The two teams would trade scores and finish the first period of play tied at twelve.

The second quarter began where the last one left off as the teams traded baskets for the majority of the period. Groff finished the half with six of her own unanswered points, all in the paint. This helped Malone take a 31-26 lead to the break and the Pioneers would hold their lead for the rest of the game.

Once again, the Dragons and the Pioneers traded shots in the opening minutes of the quarter coming out of the halftime locker room. Madison Hunter and Brooklyn Troyer each got a layup which were the first four of fourteen points that Malone would score in the paint in the third quarter.

The second half of the third quarter was highlighted by Malone's 13-2 run to close out the third quarter and give the Pioneers their largest lead of sixteen points headed into the final period of play.

The final quarter was a slower start as Tiffin scored the opening four points in the first two minutes. Malone got on the board with a three-pointer from Hutchison at the 7:17 mark.

The Dragons scored six unanswered points in response to cut Malone's lead to single digits for the first time since the middle of the third quarter.

Robin Campbell would go back and forth with Tiffin with under three minutes to play as she scored on back-to-back possessions. The Pioneers would then sink seven of their ten shots from the charity stripe, with Kelsey Swihart, Holly Groff, and Alexis Hutchison each getting some chances.

Hutchison would finish the game with another shot from the paint to seal the 15 point victory.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Holly Groff led all-scorers as she surpassed the twenty point mark with her 21 points, she also tied Hutchison for a game-high five assists. Alexis Hutchison scored 16 points as she shot 5-10 from the field and 4-6 from the free-throw line. She also pulled down 8 rebounds.
  • Robin Campbell added her own 11 points to round out the Pioneer's double-digit scorers.
  • As a team, Malone overpowered Tiffin scoring 14-0 with points off the bench and 15-2 on fastbreaks. The Pioneers slightly outscored the Dragons on points off turnovers 16-10 and points scored in the paint at 42-40.
  • The Pioneers shot 52.8% from the field and held Tiffin to just 34.8%.
