Women’s Basketball Defeats Cedarville 74-64

CANTON – The Malone University women's basketball team welcomed Cedarville University on Thursday evening.

After the Pioneers (14-11, 10-9 GMAC) gained a three point lead at the end of the first quarter, they led throughout the rest of the game.

Malone beat the Yellow Jackets (17-10, 12-9 GMAC) by ten points.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Cedarville began the evening with five points before Malone scored their first basket, a jumper by Kelsey Swihart

At the 5:20 mark of the first quarter, Alexis Hutchison scored in the paint. It sparked a run for the Pioneers as they outscored the Yellow Jackets 14-2 through the first minute of the second quarter.

Holly Groff's three-pointer at the end of the first period gave Malone a three point lead; a lead that would not disappear as the Pioneers led for the remainder of the game.

Cedarville worked to get back in the lead and brought it within a possession multiple times throughout the second half, but a couple of trips to the charity stripe by Groff and Hutchison kept the Pioneers out front.

Emma Kallas scored back-to-back layups that started a run in which Malone scored ten unanswered points before Cedarville scored a three-pointer to finish the first half with the Pioneers leading by eight points.

Coming out of the locker room, Malone scored first with Hutchison and Groff in the paint.

After the third quarter media timeout, Malone had Groff and Kallas score. Robin Campbell and Kyli Horn each sank a three-pointer to finish the Pioneer scores for the third period.

Madison Hunter started off scoring in the fourth quarter with another Pioneer shot from the paint.

Cedarville got a three-pointer at the 8:04 mark of the final period, and both teams expanded their defensive efforts. Neither team scored until Kallas got a layup at the 5:07 mark.

Kallas' layup helped Malone secure the win as she started a 10-4 Pioneer run to finish the game with the 74-64 victory.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Holly Groff and Alexis Hutchison each scored 16 points as they combined for 13-25 from the field and each sank two shots at the charity stripe. Hutchison also had a game-high 8 assists.
