Women’s Basketball Victorious Over ODU on Senior Day

CANTON – The Malone University women's basketball team closed out their regular season with Senior Day celebrations against Ohio Dominican University on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers (15-11, 11-9 GMAC) scored first and built up twelve point lead by halftime. They continued to control the game as they finished with the 70-47 victory over the Panthers (5-23, 5-17 GMAC).

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Alexis Hutchison scored on the first possession of the game. ODU and Malone would trade baskets and a Panther jumper by Kennedy Schlabach tied the game at 14 at the 3:58 mark.

A three-pointer by Kelsey Swihart started an eight point Pioneer run to finish the first quarter. Malone would not lose the lead for the remainder of the game.

Graduate student, Holly Groff, gave Malone their first double-digit lead of the game at 6:43 in the second quarter off a fast-break layup that followed her third three-pointer of the night.

A trip to the charity stripe for Robin Campbell gave the Pioneers a 38-26 lead heading into the locker room for the halftime break.

Swihart got the second half scoring started with a jumper, followed by a fastbreak layup by Emma Kallas.

To close out the third quarter, Hutchison passed to Campbell who sank a shot inside the arc to give Malone a 19 point lead.

Brooklyn Troyer grabbed a steal from the Panthers on the opening possession of the fourth quarter and turned it into a layup for herself on the other end of the court, giving Malone their first twenty-point lead.

Senior Olivia Clark got back-to-back scores to tie a season-high for herself. The Pioneers then entered a three-minute drought before scoring again when Kyli Horn sank a shot from beyond the arc.

After the team celebrated the senior class of Robin Campbell, Olivia Clark, Holly Groff, Madison Hunter, Mikayla Poole, and Nikki Weber prior to tip-off, they were then able to celebrate the twenty-three point victory.

The victory also helped the Pioneers secure a spot in the 2022 Great Midwest Women's Basketball Championship as the No. 6 seed.
