Women’s Basketball Dominates Ursuline at Home

CANTON – In their final home game of January, the Malone University women's basketball team welcomed Ursuline College into Osborne Hall.

The Pioneers never trailed on Saturday afternoon. They took a twelve point lead to the halftime break, and then continued the momentum into the second half to build their lead to finish the night with the 82-59 victory.

This is the Pioneers third straight win on their home court.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Emma Kallas scored on the opening possession. The Arrows responded with two sank free-throws to tie it up. Ursuline would shoot a perfect 14-of-14 from the charity stripe in the game.

The two teams traded three-point shots before Holly Groff would sink another from beyond the arc. The Pioneers would not turn back and hold on to the lead for the remaining 38 minutes.

Another three-point bucket from Groff would start a run for the Pioneers in which they scored 10 unanswered to build their lead to 11 points at the beginning of the second quarter.

However, Ursuline responded with 7 of their own unanswered points.
A pair of free throws from Madison Cloonan brought Ursuline within three, but Malone turned up the offense to take a double digit lead capped off with a Brooklyn Troyer shot from the paint.

The twelve point lead taken to the halftime locker room would not falter as the Pioneers would play the entire second half with a double-digit lead.

Coming out of the first media timeout of the third quarter, the two teams traded baskets. A layup by Kelsey Swihart with 4:20 to go in the quarter gave Malone their first 20+ point lead of the game and put the Pioneers up 59-38.

It took almost two minutes for the first basket to be score in the final quarter when Alexis Hutchison sank a layup off the glass on a fastbreak.

Halfway through the final quarter, Groff and Kyli Horn scored a total of 3 three pointers followed by a Emma Kallas jumper to give the home team a 78-53 advantage with four minutes to play.

Robin Campbell scored a three pointer with 1:12 on the clock to give Malone its largest lead of the night at 27.

The Arrows scored the last four points of the game, but that was not near enough for a comeback and the Pioneers took the game at an 82-59 final.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Holly Groff led the Pioneers with 19 points after shooting 7-11 from the field and 5-9 from beyond the arc.
  • Alexis Hutchison (17) and Robin Campbell (16) also scored in double-digits for Malone. Campbell also dished out a game-high 5 assists.
  • Madison Hunter pulled down a team-high 6 rebounds.
