Pioneers Earn Point, Draw with Lake Erie at Home

CANTON, Ohio -- On Thursday night, for the first time in nearly a month, the Malone University women's soccer program took to the home pitch at Pioneer Park.

The Pioneers welcomed in the Lake Erie College Storm for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) match.

Malone (0-4-2, 0-2-1 G-MAC) scored the opening goal of the game, but the Storm (2-4-2, 1-2-2 G-MAC) equalized right before halftime.

The final 65 minutes of soccer were played scoreless as the teams settled for the 1-1 draw.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
It took less than three minutes for the Pioneers to score the first goal of the season on the home turf.

Savannah Ebin controlled a throw-in deep on Lake Erie's end of the field, and beat the defense for her second goal of the season.

Both team's scoring chances were limited for much of the first half, until the Storm earned a penalty kick opportunity after the Pioneers committed a foul in the box.

Lake Erie stepped up and converted on the PK attempt to tie the game at 1-1 in the 44th minute.

Jessica Morgan was put to the test in the second half, but she turned away every single LEC shot on goal.

The match remained deadlocked at 1-1 after the full 90 minutes, and the teams headed for extra time.

Lake Erie outshot Malone 6-3 over the course of both overtime periods, but never found the back of the net.

In the end, after 110 mintues of soccer, the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

PIONEER POINTS
  • The first-half goal was Ebin's second of the season. She is now tied with Madeleine Ault for the team lead.
  • Morgan made a season-high 13 saves, pushing her season total out to 50.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Pioneers are right back at home on Saturday afternoon for another G-MAC matchup. Malone hosts Ashland University for a 3:00 p.m. kick-off.
