MASON, Ohio -- On Wednesday night the Malone University Pioneers closed out day one of the 2021 Great Midwest Baseball Championship Tournament with an opening round matchup against the top seed, and regular-season conference champion, Trevecca Nazarene University Trojans.
The Trojans (29-10) got some timely hitting early on, and were able to protect their lead down the stretch to hand the Pioneers (20-21) a 4-1 loss.
Game Highlights
Senior
Eric Mullet made his second start, and just his third appearance of the season on the mound for Malone.
He retired the Trojan batters in order in the bottom of the first, but TNU broke through for the game's first run in the second. Trevecca's leadoff batter reached on a Pioneer error, and back-to-back hits allowed TNU to take a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans added on to their lead in the bottom of the third inning. After a leadoff walk, a double into left field made it 2-0. Later in the inning TNU made it 3-0 when they scored on a wild pitch.
From that point on Mullet was nearly untouchable. Over the next three innings he struck out five batters. Then, in the bottom of the seventh he started a 1-6-3 double play that got the Pioneers out of a bit of a jam.
Malone's offense had opportunities to score throughout the contest, but most of their hits came with two outs already in the inning, and they could not capitalize.
That changed in the top of the eighth.
Joe Crank led off the inning with a single.
Jake Aleman followed with a walk. That forced Trevecca to go to the bullpen. The new arm threw a wild pitch that allowed both runners to advance into scoring position, and
Joe Watts came through with a RBI groundout to score Crank and make it 3-1. Unfortunately that was the only run Malone got in the inning.
TNU got that run right back in the bottom of the eighth, but
Clyde Yoder entered from the bullpen and limited the damage to keep the game at 4-1.
The Pioneers went down in order in the top of ninth, and Trevecca Nazarene advanced with a 4-1 win.
