Pioneers Downed by Ohio Dominican in Closing Match of the 2020-21 Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 2020-21 Malone University men's soccer season came to an end on Saturday night after the Pioneers dropped their final match to Ohio Dominican University 4-1. Patrick Alvarez scored his third goal of the season in the loss.

Malone will end the COVID-postponed spring season with a 1-8-0 record overall and in conference play. Ohio Dominican will advance to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Tournament with a 4-4-2 record, 4-3-2 in conference play.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED:
The teams traded shots for the first 20 minutes of action, with Pioneer keeper Nick Wilhelm recording two saves. Patrick Brightbill, Austin Coldsnow and Colton Fry all had looks at the net.

The Panthers made an attack in the 22nd minute with two shots that missed the mark. Nick Wilhelm kept the game scoreless with a save on an Ohio Dominican penalty kick in the 26th minute. Brightbill attempted to put Malone in front with a shot in the 36th minute, but it was saved bottom right by the ODU keeper.

In the 40th minute, the Panthers broke through for the first goal of the game. However, the Pioneers flipped the script just before half with a goal of their own in the 44th minute. Patrick Alvarez found the back of the net off a feed from Ryan Dean, his first assist of his career.

Joseph Arciniegas took a shot for Malone to start the second half, but once again was saved bottom right. Ohio Dominican responded with a goal to take a 2-1 lead just over an hour into the match. The Panthers extended their lead with a penalty kick goal in the 70th minute and found the net once again three minutes later.

PIONEER POINTS:
