CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- The Malone University women's soccer program was on the road Thursday afternoon as they kicked off play in the final week of the regular season with a Great Midwest Athletic Conference match at Cedarville University.
The Yellow Jackets (4-2-1, 4-2-1 G-MAC) struck for the first three goals of the match, which proved to be too much for the Pioneers (5-4-1, 4-4-1) to comeback from late in a 3-1 loss.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Although Cedarville dominated the scoring chances in the first half, the Malone defense was up to the challenge early on.
The Yellow Jackets had an 11-2 advantage on shots in the opening 45 minutes, but
Jessica Morgan and the defense held their own. Morgan made seven saves in the opening period of play.
Unfortunately, Cedarville did break through with less than a minute left before halftime. The Yellow Jackets were able to capitalize on a corner kick opportunity to score the game's opening goal.
That strike sparked some momentum for the home team, and CU would score again in both the 49th and 58th minutes to take a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Pioneers fought back however. In the 70th minute
Madeline Ault found
Sally Culig open, and Culig beat the Cedarville keeper for a Malone goal. It was Culig's third goal of the season, and Ault's second assist of the year.
Malone had another good look at goal less than two minutes later, but a shot from
Brooke Lindenschmidt was saved.
Cedarville was able to hang on for the final twenty minutes to pick up the 3-1 win.
PIONEER POINTS
-
With her goal Sally Culig now has three on the season. That is second on the team, trailing only Madeline Ault with five.
-
Cedarville had a 18-5 advantage on shots taken in the match, but Jessica Morgan made nine saves. That is her second-most this season. She had 10 in the double-overtime loss against Walsh earlier this year.
