Pioneers Top Trevecca 2-1 on Thursday Night

CANTON, Ohio -- The Malone University women's soccer team faced off against Trevecca Nazarene University in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play on Thursday night.

The Pioneers (3-2, 2-2 G-MAC) used a pair of second-half goals to knock of the Trojans (2-2-1, 2-1-1 G-MAC) by a final score of 2-1.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Both teams spent the first half methodically feeling each other out, but struggling to put together many good offensive chances.

Malone outshot Trevecca 6-5, and three of the Pioneers' shots were on target, but TNU made saves on all of them.

After the first 45 minutes of play the match was tied 0-0.

Things quickly changed in the second half however.

Less than 30 seconds after resuming play Andrea Fink sent a ball firing into the Trojans' box from nearly midfield. The ball skipped off of the wet turf and over the outstretched Trevecca keeper for the first goal of the game.

That play seemed to ignite some momentum for the Pioneers.

In the 58th minute Sally Culig got her foot on a pass from Keeley Malley. Culig put the ball into the back of the net to give Malone a 2-0 advantage.

Trevecca was unable to break the Pioneers' defense until it was too late. TNU did score a goal in the 82nd minute, but did not really threaten the Malone defense the rest of the way as the Pioneers held on for the 2-1 win.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Culig's goal was her second in as many games this season. She is now tied with Madeline Ault for the team lead with two goals each.

  • Fink's goal was her first of the year. That now makes six different players who have contributed on the eight goals that Malone has scored this season.

  • Tonight's win was the first in program history over Trevecca. Previously the Trojans were 4-0-1 all-time against the Pioneers.

WHAT'S NEXT?
Malone has another home match on Saturday. The Pioneers will host Kentucky Wesleyan College at GlenOak High School. Malone will celebrate Senior Day prior to the 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
