Strong Pitching Performances Spoiled as Malone Drops a Doubleheader at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio -- The Malone University Pioneers and the University of Findlay Oilers squared off in another doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The teams returned to Fifth Third Field at the Marathon Diamonds complex to complete their four-game Great Midwest Athletic Conference series.

The Pioneers (7-4, 2-2 G-MAC) got a pair of outstanding pitching performances, but in the end it was Findlay (4-7, 2-2 G-MAC) who was able to get a timely run in both contests to win both games by final scores of 1-0.

Game 1 Highlights
Senior Eric Mullet toed the rubber for Malone in the first game. He turned in a complete game performance. He struck out 10 Oiler batters, including six of the first seven that came to the plate.

Unfortunately Findlay did break through for the game's lone run in the sixth inning.

The Pioneers got the tying run to second base in the top of the 7th inning, but ultimately the Oilers were able to hang on for the 1-0 win.

Game 2 Highlights
Tommy Walker got the starting nod in the final game of the series. He also struck out 10 Findlay batters.

The Oilers did break through for the only run of the contest late in the 8th inning.

Just like in the first game Malone rallied late. Joe Gallo led off the top of the 9th inning with a double. He got to third base with just one out in the inning, but again Findlay was able to hold on for a 1-0 win.

PIONEER POINTS
  • As a staff, Mullet, Walker and Danny Miller combined to strikeout 21 batters on the afternoon. For the entire series the Pioneers sat down 46 batters, including a season-high 16 in the opening game of the series.
  • Offensively, Malone out-hit Findlay 5-4 in the second game of today's doubleheader. Joe Watts had a pair of base hits in the contest.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Pioneers will play their home opener next weekend. Malone hosts Trevecca Nazarene on March 19 and 21. The series will be played at Minerva High School.
