Men's Basketball GAMEDAY: Malone University at Ashland University

CANTON -- After a few days off to celebrate the Christmas holiday, the Malone University men's basketball team is back in action on Wednesday. The Pioneers will bring an end to the 2021 calendar with a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) trip to Ashland University. 

Malone is looking for their tenth win in a row this season.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 41st meeting all-time between these two schools. Ashland has dominated the all-time series 32-8. 

The last meeting was a 65-53 win for the Eagles in February of 2016. 

Malone's last win in the series came back in February of 2014, an 84-75 win inside Osborne Hall. 

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT MALONE UNIVERSITY

  • In their last time out, back on December 20, Malone picked up their closest non-conference win of the season. The Pioneers trailed by as many as seven points in the second-half against Emory & Henry College, but eventually pulled out an 80-72 win over the Wasps. It was the Pioneers ninth consecutive win of the season, and their fourteenth consecutive win overall inside Osborne Hall.
  • Malone stands alone atop the G-MAC standings. At 4-0, the Pioneers are the last remaining team undefeated in conference play. 
  • A big part of the Pioneers' success has been their offensive efficiency. Malone has scored at least 80 points in all but two games this season. They are the highest scoring team in the G-MAC at 86.8 points per game. 
  • As a team, Malone leads the conference in three-point field goals (112). Individually, Jaret Majestic leads the conference with 35 threes, and Bo Myers ranks fourth with 32 triples. 
  • Bryce Butler (17.1), Justin Miller (16.9), and Bo Myers (16.7) all are top-10 scorers in the league. 
  • Justin Miller continues to lead the conference with 55 assists. He also sports the fourth-best field goal percentage (55.7%). 

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT ASHLAND UNIVERSITY

  • After receiving votes in the initial preseason NABC NCAA Division II Top-25 poll, the Eagles enter Wednesday's contest at 5-4 overall and 2-1 in G-MAC play. Ashland had a game scheduled for December 20 canceled, so their most recent outing came back on December 18. It was a 71-51 loss to NCAA Division I the University of Cincinnati. 
  • So far this year, the Eagles hold G-MAC wins over Ohio Dominican University and Lake Erie College. 
  • Senior forward Derek Koch leads Ashland in scoring at 14.7 points per game. Aaron Thompson (13.1) and Brandon Haraway (12.0) are also scoring in double-digits.
  • Thompson is third in the league averaging 7.7 rebounds per game. 
  • Ashland, who was picked to finish second in the conference in the preseason coaches poll, is under the direction of head coach John Ellenwood. Ellenwood is in his thirteenth season leading the the Eagles. Last year Ashland finished 15-9 overall, won the GLIAC championship, and advanced to the. NCAA Division II Midwest Region Semifinal.
