Cedarville Edges Out Malone in Exciting Overtime Finish

CEDARVILLE, Ohio  -- Saturday evening, the Malone University men's soccer team faced off against Cedarville University for another Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) matchup.

The Pioneers (0-12-0) and the Yellow Jackets (7-2-1) fought to a stale mate in the first half, with a great showing of defense on both teams ending in a tie of 0-0 at the half.

The Yellow Jackets came out of the half with some steam, netting a goal within the first minute if play. The Pioneers went on to the attack, applying pressure when needed while also fighting hard against Cedarville's counter attacks.

Late in the 82nd minute, Colton Fry was able to create some offense and find Justin Betts for a wild header, his first goal of the season. Malone's defense held to force their second overtime of the season.

In the very last minute of the first overtime, Cedarville took the advance and got a shot off, finding the back of the net to spoil the chance of a huge upset.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Malone's defense was able to hold off Cedarville's 25 shots, while only being able to take 7 of their own.
  • Malone came away with 5 saves, compared to the Yellow Jackets zero.
  • The chemistry between Justin Betts and Colton Fry led to Betts' first goal of the season, and an exciting one at that.
