CANTON, Ohio -- The Malone University women's soccer team opened up the final homestand of the season on Thursday night by hosting the Kentucky Wesleyan College Panthers at Pioneer Park.
The Panthers (3-12, 0-11 G-MAC) carried a 2-0 lead into halftime, but the Pioneers (2-8-4, 2-6-3 G-MAC) rallied with two goals late in the second half to force overtime.
Less than one minute into the second period of extra time Malone scored the golden goal to pick up the 3-2 win.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Kentucky Wesleyan opened up the scoring with a goal in the 20th minute.
The Panthers broke through again in the 36th minute to push their lead out to 2-0.
Despite Malone outshooting KWC 8-6 in the first half, the Pioneers could not find the back of the net and trailed 2-0 at the halftime break.
MU turned up their offensive attack in the second half, and were rewarded with their first goal in the 76th minute.
Cayde Koballa sent a corner kick opportunity into the box, and
Morgan Ross headed the ball home for the first goal of her collegiate career.
The Pioneers continued to keep the pressure on the Panthers' backline, and finally got the equalizer in the 85th minute.
Luisa Velasquez controlled a ball in front of the keeper and finished the opportunity to make it a 2-2 game.
Neither team got much going in the first ten minutes of extra time, and the match headed for a second overtime.
Less than one minute into overtime number two Koballa buried a shot into the back of the net for the golden goal to give Malone the 3-2 victory.
PIONEER POINTS
- The Pioneers dominated the game, especially in the second half. Malone outshot KWC 27-12 overall, and 16-5 in the second 45 minutes of play. MU also had a 9-2 advantage on corner kicks.
- With the goals by Ross and Velasquez seven different Pioneer players have scored this season. Madeleine Ault continues to lead the way with five.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Malone is back at home on Saturday afternoon against Ohio Dominican University. The Pioneers will honor their graduating seniors prior to the 4:00 p.m. kick off.
