Women's Soccer Earns Breakthrough Win over Ursuline

CANTON, Ohio -- The Malone University women's soccer team was under the lights on Pioneer Park Thursday night for a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) match against the Ursuline College Arrows.

The game was deadlocked 0-0 at halftime, but a pair of second half goals allowed the Pioneers (1-8-4, 1-6-3) to score the 2-0 win over the Arrows (4-8-0, 3-7-0).

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
The match was delayed at the start due to several tornado warnings in the area, and the weather did not get much better throughout the night.

Although the rain dissipated, both teams were forced to battle strong winds for the entire 90 minutes.

Playing with the wind at their back in the first half, Ursuline's offense got off 12 shots compared to just 3 from the Pioneers.

Malone defense was up to the task however. Jessica Morgan made nine saves in the first half to keep the Arrows off the scoreboard.

Although the Pioneers' offense did not get much going in the first 45 minutes, things would change in the second half.

In the 57th minute Madeleine Ault controlled a free ball near midfield. She went on the attack, and beat a handful of Ursuline defenders before sending a strike past the keeper into the upper right-hand corner of the net for Malone's first goal.

That score gave the Pioneers all of the momentum.

MU capitalized again in the 63rd minute. They earned an indirect kick opportunity just in front of Ursuline's goal. Alexa Langenfeld played the ball to Natalie Martorana who rocketed a shot past the keeper for the second goal of the game.

Malone's defense controlled the final minutes of the match to wrap up the 2-0 win, and cap off their third consecutive shutout of the season.

PIONEER POINTS
  • Madeleine Ault's goal was her team-leading fifth of the season. She currently is tied for fifth in the G-MAC in goals scored.
  • Natalie Martorana's score was her first of the season, and second of her Pioneer career.
  • Jessica Morgan finished with 12 saves, her second most of the season. Tonight was her third consecutive shutout. The defense has now held opponents scoreless over the last 340+ minutes they have played this season.

WHAT'S NEXT?
The Pioneers are off this weekend. Malone will return to the pitch on Thursday for a home match against Kentucky Wesleyan College. Kick off from Pioneer Park is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
