Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Malone Defeated by Defensive-Minded Hillsdale

Malone Defeated by Defensive-Minded Hillsdale

The Malone University men's basketball team was upended by Hillsdale on Saturday afternoon 81-60. The Pioneers drop to 11-8 overall in the 2019-20 season, 5-4 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. The Hillsdale Chargers avenge a loss in their previous game and advance to 12-7 and 8-2 in conference play.

Recap:
The Chargers jumped out to an early 8-4 advantage behind back-to-back trey balls from Austen Yarian. Hillsdale would not look back from there and continue to extend their lead. The Chargers went on a 15-0 run to take a 17-point lead, the largest lead of the first half. Jaret Majestic put an end to the dry spell with a three-point shot and Sehill Mouliom scored a pair of lay-ups to trim the first half deficit.

At the midway point, Hillsdale led 41-26. Yarian's 16 points went unmatched by the Pioneers, followed closely behind by Dylan Lowry with 12. The defense forced the Pioneers to feel uncomfortable from the offensive end, going just 9-of-25 (36.0%) from the field.

Malone got it to single-digits in the second half with three free throws from Bo Myers after he was fouled on an attempt from long range, but an 8-0 spurt for the Chargers after a timeout dashed the comeback hopes of the raucous Osborne Hall crowd.

In the closing minutes, Tracey Sumner converted a tough driving lay-up and buried a shot from near half court to end the game, but it was not enough as the Chargers finished off an 81-60 victory.

Game Highlights:
- There were only two missed free throws in the game, one from each team, as the Pioneers shot 17-of-18 and Hillsdale went 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
- The Chargers gave the ball up only six times on turnovers, the second-lowest in a game for Hillsdale this season.
- Off the bench, Malone outscored Hillsdale 15-4, led by Bo Myers with 10.

Malone Individual Highlights:
- Jaret Majestic followed his 31-point outing with a 20-point game this Saturday. Majestic went 5-of-8 from the field, knocked down three shots from behind the arc, and converted on all seven free throw attempts.
- Daylan Haynie finished with eight points and led the Pioneer squad with four assists, including a lob to Sehill Mouliom.
- Marcus Ernst scored six points and pulled down a team-high seven boards.

Hillsdale Individual Highlights:

- Patrick Cartier and Dylan Lowry each finished with 18 points.
- Connor Hill netted 11 points, gathered five rebounds and distributed a game-high eight assists. Hillsdale recorded 21 assists on 33 field goals, tied for the most assists in a game this season.
