Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Pioneers Drop First Match of the Season 1-0 in Overtime

Pioneers Drop First Match of the Season 1-0 in Overtime

The Malone University women's soccer team lost a heartbreaking match to Walsh University in overtime on Saturday afternoon 1-0. Olivia Peters netted the game-winning goal for the Cavaliers in the 95th minute. Walsh moves to 4-2 on the season, 1-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Pioneers suffer their first defeat of 2019, now with a record of 3-1 and 0-1 in G-MAC action.

Early in the game, the ball was in the Malone offensive zone for extended periods of time, but the defensive line of the Cavaliers prevented the Pioneers from getting a lot of good opportunities to score.

When the ball would enter the opposite side of the field, Walsh put real pressure on the Pioneer defense and goalkeeper Haleigh Seman. In the first half, Walsh took eight shots and Seman made six saves.

The Pioneers had a few good opportunities to score in the middle of the period, with a breakaway chance and a shot that hit the right post, but neither shot would pass the coveted white line.

A pair of shots by Sally Culig were saved by the Cavalier keeper Mickey McClanahan and kept the game scoreless at the half.

The second half would see the rare late-September heat really take its toll on the athletes, as the teams fought tooth and nail to take the advantage but neither team could do so.

After 90 minutes of play, the game remained scoreless. With quick ball movement in the overtime period, Walsh netted the goal and won the match off the foot of Olivia Peters, who took a game-high nine shots.

Walsh outshot Malone 20-14 in the match, with shots on goal being very uneven at 11-4. Fouls were lopsided as well: Malone with 15 and Walsh with six.

Seman finished with 10 saves in net.

Danielle Lung took four shots, along with two from Keeley Malley, Alenna Bible and Sally Culig.

The Malone women's soccer team travels to Alderson Broaddus on Saturday, September 28 for their next match.
