Danielle Lung’s Hat Trick Sparks Malone to First G-MAC Win

The Malone University women's soccer team tallied its first Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) victory of the season with a 5-1 thrashing of Alderson Broaddus University Saturday afternoon in Philippi, West Virginia. The Pioneers, who have now scored 12 goals in five games this season, improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the G-MAC. Alderson Broaddus, meanwhile, dropped to 2-3 on the year and 0-2 in conference.

Recap
It took just under nine minutes for Malone to score the first goal in its highest-scoring road match since 2012.  Taking advantage of a 2-on-1 breakaway opportunity with only the keeper to beat, Kirsten Hilty delivered a right-to-left pass in front of the diving keeper to an uncovered Danielle Lung, who fired a point blank shot into the back of the net to put Malone up by one. Lung's goal was the first of three during the match

Just two minutes after her first goal, a red card on the Battlers goalkeeper gave Lung a penalty kick try. The junior Pioneer rifled a shot inside the right post to give Malone a 2-0 lead only 11 minutes into the first half.

The scored remained 2-0 until senior midfielder Jeanette Soricelli made it a 3-0 game with six minutes remaining. The 5'0 Soricelli gathered in a loose ball off a deflected pass inside the box and rolled a right-footed shot to the lower right corner, finding the back of the net for the first time in her collegiate career.

Just over two-and-half minutes later, Madeline Ault put the Pioneers up by four when she hauled in a Pioneer through-ball, outraced the Battlers to the point of attack, and put a shot past the keeper from 10 yards out.

Alderson Broaddus gained a goal back from Malone around 90 seconds before half time.

The majority of the second half remained scoreless despite numerous goal chances for the Pioneers. Malone finally took advantage of their favorable circumstances, scoring for the fifth and final time in the 85th minute.

Lung, who took a total of eight shots in the contest, recorded her first collegiate hat trick after splitting two defenders and powering her way to the net where she scored her third goal of the match and sixth of the season from 12 yards out.

Lung achieved the 43rd hat trick in Pioneer women's soccer history and the first since Christine Najjar did so twice in 2016.

Malone out-shot Alderson Broaddus 30-4 in the contest, including a 15-3 edge in shots on goal. Keeley Malley and Megan Fuller each recorded five shots with three on goal. Jessica Morgan registered two second-half saves.
