The Malone University volleyball team earned win number four on the young season with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-14 victory over Edinboro University Friday afternoon on day one of the Gannon-Edinboro Tournament. With the non-conference road win, Malone improved to 4-7 on the season while the Fighting Scots fell to 4-5.

Malone began the match on a 4-0 run and would lead 21-20 deep into the first set, but the Fighting Scots recovered to win five of the next six points and take the first-set advantage on their home floor. The Pioneers countered with a win in the second set, turning a slight 15-14 edge into a convincing 25-18 victory with a 10-4 run which featured seven Malone kills and a service ace by
Abby Hasebein.

Trying to regain its advantage, Edinboro pulled away to a 15-10 lead in the third set before Malone fought back to tie 18-18. After back-to-back points for the Fighting Scots, Malone won seven of eight to claim the set and take a two-to-one lead into the fourth. Malone raced out to another 4-0 advantage in the decisive frame and pushed forward to victory with a 7-0 run in the middle of the set before freshman
Anna Mallette punctuated the contest with a kill.

Mallette was one of six Pioneer hitters with at least six skills, finishing with eight kills in the balanced offensive attack which accounted for 45 kills and just a season-low 12 attack errors in the victory.

Faith Lau and
Rachel Santos shared the team lead with nine kills each,
Hannah Eliason totaled eight,
Kayla Jarosz tallied six, and
Brooklyn Sullivan provided five. Setters
Abbie Swaino (18 assists, two aces) and
Elizabeth Selleny (16 assists, three aces) made their presence felt in the scoring with 34 combined assists and five aces.

Defensively, Lau collected a match-high 18 digs,
Sydney Black totaled 10, and Swaino narrowly missed a double-double with nine. Santos and Sullivan were each credited with four blocks up front.

Malone will make the short trip to Erie, PA on Saturday to face Gannon University on Saturday at 2:00 pm before facing Saint Rose (NY) in a neutral-site affair at 4:00 pm.
