Malone Suffers Four-Set Defeat at Findlay

The Malone University volleyball dropped a four-set decision at the University of Findlay Friday night. The Pioneers won the first set, but ultimately lost the match 25-20, 21-25, 26-28, 18-25. With the loss, Malone fell to 9-19 on the season and 4-5 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

Findlay (7-18, 4-5 G-MAC) opened up an early 7-3 lead, but the Pioneers turned the tide in the opening set on a 10-0 Abby Hasebein service run, which featured a trio of aces. After going ahead 18-11, Malone maintained a comfortable advantage and put the set away on a kill from Brooklyn Sullivan.
 
The second set went in favor of the home team as the Oilers hurried to a 12-5 lead. Malone chipped away at the seven-point deficit and eventually brought the score to within a point (16-15) before Findlay answered with a 6-1 run. Malone closed to within two points again at 23-21 before Findlay even the matched at a set each with two straight points.
 
The third set saw the two teams tied a total of 12 times in a nail-biting stanza in which Findlay won eight of the final 11 points. The Pioneers had leads of 23-20, 24-22, 25-24, and 26-25 but failed to deliver the fatal blow. 
 
The Oilers used the momentum of the third-set win, beginning the fourth up 10-3. A resilient Pioneer squad fought back to tie the match at 15-15, but the Oilers bookended the set with another 10-3 run and came away with the four-set triumph.
 
Kayla Jarosz led Malone with 10 kills in the match. She was followed by Hannah Eliason and Anna Mallette with nine kills apiece and Faith Lau with eight kill spikes.  Defensive specialist  Abby Hasebein chipped in four service aces and five assists.
 
Setters Elizabeth Selleny (20 assists, 10 digs) and Abbie Swaino (16 assists, 10 digs) each registered double-doubles in defeat.
 
Libero Sydney Black totaled a match-high 27 digs, marking her fifth match this season with at least 25 digs. Lau scooped up 15 digs to aid in the back row.
