The Malone University men's basketball team played its final tune-up before the start of the regular season on Tuesday night in an exhibition contest at NCAA Division I Akron. The Zips bested the Pioneers 81-64 in the I-77 clash.
Recap
Following back-to-back three-pointers by Akron to start the game, Malone raised some eyebrows with a 10-0 run capped by treys from freshman
Bo Myers and sophomore
Kenneth McCullough-Lomax Jr. Malone extended its lead to 16-10 following six straight points by senior
Sehill Mouliom, before the Zips began fighting back on the strength of a 12-2 run. By halftime, Akron opened up a 39-30 advantage.
Back-to-back buckets from
Jaret Majestic and
Daylan Haynie helped the Pioneers close to within six points (45-39) in the early stages of the second half, but Malone would not get any closer. After falling behind by as many as 22 points, the Pioneers still battled, narrowing the gap to 10 (66-56) on an 11-0 run highlighted by seven points from Majestic. The Zips held on late, though, and earned their first win of the season.
