The Malone University men's basketball team plays Wheeling University and Northwood University this week as the Pioneers look to gain positive momentum with Great Midwest Athletic Conference play right around the corner. Malone will make a return trip to the Mountain State on Wednesday, November 20 as the Pioneers square off with the Wheeling Cardinals at 6 pm. For the second consecutive Saturday, men's basketball will be at home. Malone faces the Northwood Timberwolves on November 23 at 4 pm. Tip-off will be immediately following the women's basketball game versus Carlow University.

Series History:
The Pioneers are 1-4 all-time versus the Cardinals of Wheeling University (formerly Wheeling Jesuit). The last meeting between these two teams happened almost 30 years ago to the day as the Pioneers defeated Wheeling 92-72 on November 24, 1989.

This will be the rubber match for Malone and Northwood, as the teams are 2-2 all-time. As members of the Great Lake Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC), they met most recently in 2015 with Northwood winning 85-79.

Malone enters play this week with a record of 2-2, and is coming off a 33-point victory against Bethany College on Saturday. Last Wednesday, the Pioneers lost to the University of Charleston in an offensive explosion 95-89.

Bo Myers unleashed a long range attack on the Bisons Saturday, connecting on six three-pointers in the second half alone to tally a career-high 21 points.

Jaret Majestic has been a major threat from behind the arc as well. Off the bench this season, the junior has shot 14-of-35 from distance and leads the team with 16.3 points per game.

Daylan Haynie neared a triple double on Saturday, totaling 10 points, seven rebounds and nine assists. The point guard is averaging a team-high five assists per game in the young season.

Marcus Ernst is leading the team in field goal percentage at 59.5% (25-of-42), scores 14.5 points per game and collects an average of 6.5 rebounds per contest.

Last season, the Cardinals finished with a record of 9-21, but were stout at home, going 5-8 at the Alma Grace McDonough Center. Wheeling has hired a new head coach, Will Ryan, for the 2019-20 season. Ryan is the oldest son of College Basketball Hall of Famer and former University of Wisconsin Head Coach Bo Ryan. He spent the previous five seasons as an assistant at Ohio University.

In their only game in the 2019-20 season, the Wheeling Cardinals upended the Seton Hill Griffons 73-61 in the team's home opener. Wheeling will have one full week of rest before facing the Pioneers, however only 40 minutes of in-game court time, compared to Malone with 160 minutes accumulated.

Against Seton Hill, the Cardinals were led by Emmanuel Ansong. Ansong recorded a double-double, with 20 points and 10 rebounds. He also recorded a team high three steals. The sophomore averaged 7.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game last season.

Jordan Reed, Jaret Haynes and Jay Gentry all started for Wheeling and put up a double-digit figure in the scoring column against the Griffons. Reed is new to Wheeling this season after transferring from Howard Community College. Haynes is also a junior college transfer, coming to Wheeling from Genesee Community College, where he was an all-conference selection. He will be someone to look out for whenever he is on the floor. Gentry averaged 7.3 points in the 2018-19 season for the Cardinals.

The Timberwolves are 2-2 this season, but have won their last two games at home. Northwood defeated G-MAC opponent Findlay and Great Lakes Christian, but dropped contests to NCAA Division II #3 Bellarmine and the University of Indianapolis. Northwood finished last season with a 12-17 record. Offensively, Northwood is averaging 81.5 points per game as a squad.

Senior guard Trey McBride leads the Timberwolves in scoring this season, averaging 15 points per game. McBride is a three year starter that averages 13.3 points over his career.

Jack Ammerman and Ja'Kavien Lewis are each sophomores averaging 13 points in 2019-20. For Ammerman, 82% of his points this season have come from 3-point shots. He shoots 46.9% from deep (15-of-32). Lewis gets to the charity stripe with ease and is 19-of-24 from the line this year.
