The Malone University women's soccer team defeated Ursuline College today in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference match 1-0. The win puts the Pioneers at 6-1-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the G-MAC. Ursuline slides to 2-4-1, 1-3-1 in conference play.
Â
Six wins for the program in 2019 bests their win total from the previous season. It is also the first time since 2015 that Malone has shutout conference opponents in consecutive games.
Â
Ursuline entered the attacking zone frequently to start the contest. Fouls drawn by the Arrows allowed for four free kicks in the opening 12 minutes. Keeper
Haleigh Seman made two of her three first half saves in that time and defenders
Lindsey Soltisz,
Natalie Martorana,
Brooke Lindenschmidt and
Andrea Fink did a great job at keeping the Ursuline attack at bay.
Â
In the 26th minute, forward
Keeley Malley entered the game and two minutes later found the back of the net with a laser just over the head of the keeper from the middle of the 18-yard box. The goal was set up by a great entry pass from
Alexa Langenfeld.
Â
Ursuline outshot the Pioneers 7-3 in the first half, but Malone put the all-important goal on the board to make it 1-0.
Â
The Pioneers had a couple of great looks to put the game out of reach in half number two, but could not convert.
Â
In the closing minutes of the contest, ball control was the key factor. Ursuline did a good job of building momentum and even got a shot on goal with less than a minute to play but Seman made the save to preserve the win.
Â
In total, Malone outshot Ursuline 12-9 and
Haleigh Seman made four saves.
Â
Payton Beech took a team-high three shots.
Amanda Kinsey and
Danielle Lung chipped in with two apiece.
Â
The Pioneers are in action next Saturday for a match versus the Alderson Broaddus Battlers. The game will be the opening contest of a double-header with the men's team. Kick-off for the women is at 1 pm and the men are scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.
