The Malone University men's soccer team dropped a match to the Lake Erie Storm Wednesday night by a score of 5-1. The number 9 ranked team in NCAA Division II Lake Erie wins their ninth straight contest and moves to 9-0 on the season and 5-0 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. The Pioneers fall to 1-4-2 and sit at 0-4-1 in the G-MAC.
Â
Wet weather conditions played a factor in the first half of the game, limiting scoring opportunities and quick movements on the damp turf. Malone had a few close attempts in the first, including a shot off the crossbar from
Simon Eybert.
Â
Malone would have to play with 10 men for the majority of the contest after keeper
Alexandre Durand was dealt a red card.
Â
The game remained scoreless through halftime and well into the second half, until the Storm broke through for a goal by Jonathan Carr in the 79th minute.
Â
Carr struck again in the 84th minute to unleash a flurry of offense. Ayden Von Essen netted two for the Storm, Pioneer forward
Nathan McFeaters scored his third goal of the season, and Sander Van der Sluijs made the final score 5-1. All six goals scored in the last 11 minutes.
Â
The Pioneers next take the field on October 10 when the Pioneers look to avenge a loss just a week ago against Ohio Valley.
