The Malone University women's basketball team, backed by another outstanding defensive performance, earned a 64-54 win over Alderson Broaddus University Saturday afternoon in Osborne Hall. The Pioneers held the Battlers to just 29.2% shooting as they improved to 8-11 on the season and 6-7 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).

Recap
Alderson Broaddus (3-13, 3-10 G-MAC) took its only lead of the game with a layup on its second possession. Malone countered with a three-pointer from
Chrissie Vaughan and never trailed again. After breaking a 5-5 tie on a pair of
Paiten Strother free throws, the Pioneers led for the duration.
Â
Malone, who hit six first-quarter three-pointers in Thursday's night win over Davis & Elkins, made three treys in Saturday's opening stanza on its way to a 19-12 lead. Freshman forward
Madison Hunter then accounted for five points in the second period before Malone went to intermission leading 35-28. Fellow freshman
Haley Shutt scored her first career points on a pair of free throws midway through the quarter to help keep Malone in front.
Â
The Pioneers opened the second half on a 10-1 run highlighted by another three-ball by Vaughan as the lead swelled to its largest of the game at 45-29. By the end of the quarter, though, Alderson Broaddus trimmed the deficit to 10 points (50-40) and then cut it to eight a minute into the fourth. Vaughan would answer with another trey to push the lead back out to 11, however, as Malone maintained a comfortable advantage over the remainder of the game.
