The Malone University cross country teams put together strong performances on Saturday at the University of Akron's Tommy Evans Invitational.
In a field that included several NCAA Division I programs, the Pioneer placed second among seven teams while the Malone women took third among nine institutions.
In the men's four-mile race, Youngstown State University took first with 39 points, edging Malone which totaled 50 points. Host Akron was third with 62 points, Kent State University was fourth at 71 and Baldwin Wallace University was fifth with 150.
Akron secured the women's team title in the 5K with 32 points. Kent State was second with 74 followed by Malone with 92 points, Youngstown State at 107 and Cleveland State with 132.
George McCartney placed fourth overall in the men's race with a time of 19:57. Twins
Noah Chaplik and
Nick Chaplik placed seventh and eighth, respectively, both with times of 20:05.
Nicholas Michels was 15th in 20:23,
Brett Cortelletti placed 16th at 20:24,
Zach Fresenko finished 18th at 20:26 and
Christopher Cannon was 19th in 20:27.
Akron transfer
Mackenna Curtis-Collins paced the Pioneer women as she placed eighth overall in 18:42.
Rachel Wentworth was right on her heels, placing ninth with a time of 18:44.
Jasmine Penrod placed 20th in 18:59,
Leah Metzger was 23rd with a mark of 19:01,
Maria Martin took 32nd in 19:23,
Clare Willett was 36th at 19:36 and
Jocelyn Miller was 38th at 19:39.
Both Pioneer teams will be back in action next Saturday at the Kutztown University Invitational in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.
