The Malone University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1, double-overtime defeat to Davis & College College on Saturday night in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference contest at Canton Central Catholic High School.
With less than two minutes to play in the final overtime period, the Senators' Asheli Freed broke a 1-1 stalemate, delivering the game-winner on a penalty-kick attempt after the Pioneers were whistled for a foul in the penalty area.
The score marked Freed's fourth tally of the season and her second goal of the game.Â
Following a scoreless first half, the junior put the visitors in front 1-0 in the 60th minute after gathering in a cross from teammate Lisa Milliken and firing a shot into the net.
Malone senior
Dani Giles found the equalizer for the hosts ten minutes later, tapping in her second goal of the season after being set up by a pair of nice passes from
Keeley Malley and
Madeline Ault.
The Pioneers then appeared to have pulled ahead in the 81st minute when
Alexa Langenfeld knocked in a penalty shot. However, the apparent goal was waved off and Langenfeld was given a second attempt. This time, Senator goalkeeper Lauren Hill got her hand on the ball, preventing Malone from taking the lead.
The match remained tied at 1-1 through the remainder of regulation and the first 10-minute overtime period.
The Senators then went on the attack in the final overtime frame, launching five shots and four corner kicks before a foul was called in front of Malone's net, setting up Freed's winning shot.
The Pioneers slipped to 2-4-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the G-MAC with the loss while Davis & Elkins improved to 3-3-1 overall and 3-3-0 in the conference.
Malone held a 20-19 edge in total shots and a 13-5 advantage in shots on goal in the contest.
