Pioneer Men Finish First, Women Second at Kutztown; McCartney & Wentworth Claim Individual Titles

The Malone University men's cross country team placed first while the Pioneer women took second on Saturday morning at Kutztown University's Division II/Division III Challenge.  Senior George McCartney won the men's 8K race in 26:28 while junior Rachel Wentworth earned her first collegiate victory, crossing the finish line first in the women's 6K event with a mark of 23:31.3.

The Pioneer men claimed the team title among a strong 11-team field with 30 points.  Stonehill University, ranked 15th in the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II Preseason National Poll, was second with 38 points.  Southern Connecticut State University was third with 102 points, Salisbury University was fourth with 149 points and host Kutztown was fifth at 150. 

The Malone women were second out of 10 teams with 53 points.  NCAA Division II No. 23 Stonehill placed first with 24 points.  West Chester University placed third with 100 points.  Kutztown was fourth at 126 and Le Moyne College was fifth with 126.

Twin brothers Nick Chaplik and Noah Chaplik were right behind McCartney in the men's race as Nick took third in 26:32.9 and Noah was fourth in 26:38.4.  Brett Cortelletti was next for the Pioneers in ninth place with a time of 26:54.4.  Zach Fresenko took 13th in 27:06.0, Noah Whittington was 16th at 27:13.0, Christopher Cannon placed 20th in 27:27.4, Nicholas Michels was 21st at 27:28.5 and Lucas Huber was 23rd in 27:37.2.

In the women's race, Wentworth was followed by Mackenna Curtis-Collins in tenth at 24:02.3 and Jasmine Penrod in 11th in 24:03.3.  Maria Martin placed 15th in 24:25.6 and Leah Metzger was 16th at 24:41.8.  Jocelyn Miller was 29th in 25:20.3, Dana Risley was 36th at 25:40.0, Jenna Beakas was 43rd in 25:59.8 and Clare Willett was 50th at 26:14.3.

The Pioneers will next compete at the All-Ohio Championships in Norton, Ohio on September 29th.
