Softball Scores Twenty Runs in Double-Header

The Malone University softball team split a pair of games with Ursuline on Friday. The Pioneers won game one, 8-3. Malone lost an offensive shootout, 16-12, in game two. The Pioneers move to 10-6 (3-3) on the season.

Game One Recap

The Pioneers scored a run in each of the first three innings, while holding Ursuline scoreless until the third. Brooklyn Miller hit a solo shot in the third, to cut Malone's lead to 3-1.

A pair of Pioneer errors and a double from Ursuline allowed the Arrows to tie things up in the fourth inning.

Malone answered back with authority in the fifth inning. Bailer Byers smashed a leadoff homerun to regain the lead. With two outs in the inning Madison Corrick smacked her second double of the contest, and would score on a two-run homer from Ashley Beck. Emily Beck would follow with a double of her own as well.

The Pioneers picked up two more runs in the 6th for the 8-3 victory.

Isabella Roberts picked up her fifth win in her sixth start of the season. Roberts pitched a complete game, which she has done in every victory this year. Roberts gave up just one earned run while striking out five batters in the contest.

Madison Corrick put on a hitting clinic in game one, going 4 for 4 with two doubles.
 
Game Two Recap

As the weather continued to get colder in game two, the bats seemed to get hotter and hotter. The two teams combined for 28 runs on 33 hits in the contest.

Malone took an early 1-0 lead on a double by Anna Myers.

Ursuline answered back with two runs in the first and another in the second for a 3-1 lead.

After picking up a run in the third, Malone was able to regain the lead in the fourth inning. Ashley Beck led off the inning with a double, and scored on an error tying the game 3-3. With two outs and two runners on, Bailey Byers once against stepped to the plate in crunch time. Byers cranked a three-run blast to centerfield, giving Malone a 6-3 lead.

Ursuline bounced right back, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain a 7-6 advantage. With two outs in the inning the Arrows hit a two-run double, followed by a two-run homerun.

Corrick hit a leadoff double in the fifth, representing the tying run in scoring position. Ashley Beck and Cailey Ritts each reached base, loading them up for pinch hitter, Abigail Mowrer. Mowrer capitalized, hitting a two-run double to left and giving Malone a 9-8 lead.

After holding Ursuline off the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, Malone extended their lead to 12-8 with a three-run inning in the sixth.

Ursuline rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring nine runs on eight hits and two errors by the Pioneer defense to win 16-12. Five Ursuline batters stepped to the plate a second time in the inning.

Five Pioneer players had multi-hit games in the contest. Bailey Byers went 3 for 5 with five RBIs, hitting a double and homerun in the contest.

The Pioneers hit five doubles in the game.
