The Malone University softball team lost a pair of games to Hillsdale on Friday evening. Malone lost both games by a score of 7-4. The Pioneer record falls to 12-12 overall, with a 5-9 record in the conference.
Game One Recap
The Pioneer offense got off to a hot start in game one, taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Bailey Byers and
Madison Corrick reached base in the first two at-bats of the game. After outs by the next two Pioneer batters,
Ashley Beck whacked a three-run homer, scoring Byers and Corrick.
Hillsdale bounced back with a big inning in the second which included back-to-back doubles. The Chargers were able to scrape together three runs of their own, tying the game 3-3.
The Pioneer defense made quick work of the Hillsdale offense in innings three and four, but the Chargers broke the game open with another three-run inning in the fifth. A walk, a passed ball, and five singles accounted for Hillsdale's big inning.
Bailey Byers hit an RBI single, scoring
Nicole Ferrara, in the sixth inning to cut Hillsdale's lead to 6-4. However, the Pioneer offense was unable to produce beyond their four runs.
Hillsdale added one more run in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-4 victory.
Isabella Roberts gave up a season-high six earned run on eleven hits in the contest.
Ashley Beck's homerun was her fourth on the season. She currently has the second most on the team.
Game Two Recap
The Pioneer offense was practically silent through the first four innings of game two.
Hillsdale took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a pair of doubles. A solo homer in the fourth gave the Chargers a 2-0 advantage.
Starting at the top of the order, the first five batters were able to get a hit for the Pioneers in the top of the fifth. The inning was highlighted by a pair of doubles by
Bailey Byers and
Ashley Beck, helping the Pioneers to tie the game 2-2.
Malone was able to take a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning on a pair of hits by
Caley Ritts and
Madison Corrick, as well as a pair of defensive errors by the Hillsdale defense.
The Pioneers made a great rally, scoring four unanswered runs to take the lead from Hillsdale, but Hillsdale answered back in a huge way with five runs in bottom of the sixth.
The game was tied 4-4 with two outs, but back-to-back batters were able to find open space to knock in three more runs as the Chargers would go on to win 7-4.
Madison Corrick (3-4) and
Serena Tucciarelli (2-4) each had multi-hit games.
Corrick,
Bailey Byers and
Ashley Beck each doubled in the game.
