The Malone University women's basketball team dropped to 3-5 on the season and 1-2 in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) after suffering a 70-44 loss to Hillsdale College Thursday night in southern Michigan. The game was close throughout the first three quarters and Malone trailed by just two points early in the fourth, but a 17-0 run by the Chargers proved to be the Pioneers' undoing.
Recap
Hillsdale (3-5, 2-1 G-MAC) opened a 15-14 lead after one quarter while freshman guard Robin Campell accounted for half of the Pioneer scoring. In the second quarter, neither team shot well as the Chargers, who were just 4-of-17, outscored the Pioneers 9-6 in the frame. Malone was held to just three field goals on 19 attempts, including a nifty reverse layup by
Madison Hunter underneath the basket which made it a 24-20 game going into the second half.
Â
Points came a little bit easier in the third quarter for the Pioneers, who knocked down three of their four third-quarter triples during an 11-3 run that put them ahead 31-29 midway through the stanza. Hillsdale, however, answered with a layup on its next possession and would eventually take a 42-38 lead into the final period.
Â
On the second possession of the fourth quarter, a
Sydney Wentling layup cut the deficit to just two points at 42-40, but from there, Malone went ice-cold and Hillsdale red-hot. The Chargers scored the next 17 points and 28 of the final 32 to secure a misleading 70-44 victory.
