Pioneers Set to Travel to Trevecca Nazarene & Kentucky Wesleyan

Bryce Butler has scored in double digits in each of the last eight games.

The Malone University men's basketball team will look to break out of a three-game losing streak this week when it visits Trevecca Nazarene University (December 13th) and Kentucky Wesleyan College (December 15th) for a pair of Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) road games. The Pioneers, who enter the week at 5-5 overall and 1-3 in conference, have not lost four straight conference games since their last season in the GLIAC in 2015-16.

Series History
Malone is 3-1 in four all-time meetings with Trevecca, including a 1-1 split last winter. Before their 74-71 home victory over the Trojans in February, in which they scored the go-ahead points in the final minute, the Pioneers shot a season-low 32.1% in a 61-57 loss to TNU in Nashville in January.
 
Against Kentucky Wesleyan, Malone is 2-3 all-time, including a pair of dominant wins over the Panthers last season. The Pioneers led by as many as 29 points in an 86-70 home win over KWC in February. One month prior to that, Malone went to the Owensboro Sportscenter and handed the Panthers an 88-58 defeat, their worst home loss since 1956.

  • The Pioneers are coming off of an 0-2 week that included a 73-57 loss to Hillsdale on Thursday and an 81-75 loss to NCAA DII #17 Findlay on Saturday.
  • Senior guard Nate Sheppard scored a team-high 15 points at Hillsdale but was held to a season-low five points at Findlay. Sheppard remains the G-MAC's leading scorer, averaging 20.2 points per game. He scored 15.5 ppg in four games against Trevecca and Kentucky Wesleyan last season.
  • Junior guard Bryce Butler scored a career-high 26 points at Findlay, upping his season average to 14.9 points per game. Butler is shooting a robust 53.3% (16-of-30) from three-point range and he ranks third in the G-MAC in field goal shooting overall at 55.8%.
  • Sophomore forward Marcus Ernst, a 48.2% shooter, is averaging 6.8 points and a team-leading 7.5 rebounds per game. Ernst, who ranks second on the team with 13 steals, is seventh in the G-MAC in both rebounding and blocked shots (14).
  • Point guard Daylan Haynie (8.6 ppg) leads the team with 14 steals and is tied for the G-MAC lead with 55 assists (5.5 apg).
  • Senior forward Ben Evans is third on the team in both scoring (11.0 ppg) and rebounding (4.9 rpg). Evans rounds out the starting five, playing 28 minutes per game. Malone is the only team in the G-MAC with five players averaging at least 28 minutes.
  • Sophomore guard Jaret Majestic (24.8 mpg) leads the team in bench minutes and bench scoring (7.7 ppg). He knocked down five threes and finished with 17 points in the loss at Findlay.
  • Junior forward Sehill Mouliom scored a season-high nine points in that same game. On the year, Mouliom is making 63.6% of his field goal tries.
  • As a team, Malone ranks fifth in the G-MAC in shooting (45.5%) and fourth in field goal defense (42.9%), but those numbers are virtually reversed in games played away from home where the Pioneers are just 1-4 on the season.

  • The Trojans and first-year head coach Omar Mance are coming off of 100-91 loss to Tiffin in which three players scored at least 20 points. Trevecca hit 18 threes in the game and led 79-72 with just over six minutes to go, but was outscored 28-9 down the stretch to remain winless on the season.
  • Junior guard Evan Ragsdale hit nine of those three-pointers (9-of-11) and finished with a team-high 29 points in the loss. On the season, he leads Trevecca in scoring at 11.6 points per game.
  • As a team, Trevecca ranks 2nd in the G-MAC and 18th in DII with 11.3 made three pointers per game.

Kentucky Wesleyan Notes - Roster | Schedule | Stats
  • The new-look Panthers, led by another first-year head coach in Drew Cooper, are coming off of a 76-59 road loss to Cedarville last Saturday in which they shot a season-low 33.3% from the field. A traditional powerhouse in DII basketball, KWC, who hosts Walsh on Thursday, is just 1-3 at home this season.
  • The Panthers are led in scoring by junior guard Adam Goetz (15.1 ppg) and junior forward Deng Mayot (14.9 ppg). Mayot is second in the G-MAC in shooting (60.6%) while Goetz is fourth in the G-MAC with 3.1 made threes per game.
  • As a team, Kentucky Wesleyan leads the G-MAC and ranks seventh in Division II with 12.1 threes per game.
