The Malone University cross country teams each registered Top 10 finishes at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday in Hillsdale, Michigan
The Pioneer men, ranked 17th in the most recent NCAA Division II National Poll, placed eighth overall among 32 teams while the Malone women claimed a ninth-place showing among 29 teams.
Sophomore
Zach Fresenko and senior
George McCartney both collected All-Region accolades for the men's team by virtue of finishing among the Top 25 individuals. Fresenko placed 18th among over 200 competitors in the men's 10K competition with a time of 32:24.0. McCartney was step-for-step with Fresenko, finishing 19th in 32:24.1.
Noah Chaplik was next for the Pioneers, placing 54th overall in 33:21.3.Â
Nicholas Michels took 61st (33:27.0),
Lucas Huber was 73rd (33:41.8),
Brett Cortelletti finished 98th (34:05.5) and
Nick Chaplik was 108th (34:14.3).
NCAA Division II No. 3 Grand Valley State University captured the men's race with 38 points. No. 10 Saginaw Valley State University was second with 92 points and No. 19 Walsh University claimed a third-place finish with 131 points. The University of Southern Indiana, listed among those receiving votes in the national poll, was fourth at Saturday's race with 147 points and Cedarville University rounded out the Top 5 with 184 points.
The top three men's teams and top three women's team from each of the eight regional championship meets across the country receive automatic bids to the NCAA Division II National Championships.Â
Rachel Wentworth led the way for the Pioneer women, finishing 37th among nearly 200 competitors in the 6K event with a mark of 22:56.6.Â
Jasmine Penrod followed in 47th (23:17.4),
Leah Metzger was 62nd (23:37.7),
Maria Martin took 78th (23:54.8),
Jocelyn Miller was 81st (23:57.5),
Dana Risley was 101st (24:20.7) and
Mackenna Curtis-Collins was 134th (25:09.9).
NCAA Division II No. 3 Grand Valley State claimed the women's team title with an incredible total of 26 points. Hillsdale, listed among those receiving votes in the latest national poll, was second with 104 points. No. 20 Michigan Tech University was third with 116 points, 17th-ranked Walsh was fourth with 117 points and Saginaw Valley State was fifth with 196 points.
