Men’s Cross Country Places Second, Women Fourth At Disney Classic

The Malone University cross country teams each registered Top 5 finishes at the Disney Classic in Orlando, Florida on Saturday morning.

The Pioneer men, ranked 21st in the most recent NCAA Division II National Poll, finished runner-up among 16 teams while the Malone women took fourth out of 23 competing programs.

 On the men's side, NCAA Division I Florida A&M University edged Malone for first-place with 21 points.  Malone followed with 42 points and Saint Leo University was third with 88 points.

As he has done all season, senior George McCartney paced the Pioneer men's team, finishing fifth overall with a time of 25:26.7 on the 8K course.  Noah Chaplik was right behind McCartney, placing sixth in 25:28.5.  Noah's twin brother, Nick Chaplik, followed in ninth place at 25:49.4 and Brett Cortelletti was tenth with a mark of 25:55.9.

Noah Whittington (26:14.3), Christopher Cannon (26:22.9), Nicholas Michels (26:23.5) and Zach Fresenko (26:25.13) followed in places 12-15, giving Malone eight of the top 15 individual performances.

Also competing for the Pioneer men was Lucas Huber (26:38.2), Noah Harper (26:57.3), Joey Coudriet (27:23.8), Matthew Kuyken (27:31.8) and Dan Carmany (27:47.4).

NCAA Division I Youngstown State University claimed the women's team title with 45 points.  Florida Southern College was a close second at 49 points.  Florida A&M was third at 68 points followed by Malone in fourth with 101 points.

Jasmine Penrod led the way for the Pioneers as she placed 10th among nearly 200 competitors with a 5K time of 18:50.6.  Mackenna Curtis-Collins was next, finishing 16th in 19:07.5.  Maria Martin was 22nd in 19:15.1 followed by Leah Metzger in 30th at 19:27.8 and Jocelyn Miller in 33rd at 19:33.6.

Other Pioneer participants included Rachel Wentworth (19:48.6), Julia Westall (20:08.1), Clare Willett (20:13.2), Maria Blasiole (20:23.8) and Jenna Beakas (20:28.2).

Malone will send student-athletes to Oberlin College's Inter-Regional Rumble next Saturday.
