Late Goal Propels Pioneers To 2-1 Win Over Ursuline

Malone University sophomore Keeley Malley scored with under eight minutes remaining in regulation on Thursday afternoon to lift the Pioneer women's soccer team to a 2-1 Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory over Ursuline College at Canton Central Catholic High School.

The Pioneers grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute of the contest as freshman Alenna Bible collected the rebound off a shot from teammate Alexa Langenfeld and fired the ball past the Arrows' keeper for her first career goal.

The visitors found the equalizer less than four minutes later as Ursuline's Sarah Mitchell fielded a pair of quick passes form Odessa Strizzi and Jarah Froehlich and then fired a long shot from a wide angle that sailed just out of reach for Malone goalkeeper Haleigh Seman.

The match then remained deadlocked at 1-1 through the remainder of the opening period and the first 37 minutes of the second half.

With the clock winding down, defender Brooke Lindenschmidt launched a throw from the sideline that arrived at the feet of Malley.  With a defender draped on her back, Malley dribbled towards the middle of the penalty box and fired the game-winning shot just inside the far post.  The goal was Malley's first of the season and the third of her young career.

The hard-fought triumph avenged a 2-1 overtime loss to the Arrows from earlier in the season and improved the Pioneers' record to 4-8-2 overall and 2-8-2 in the G-MAC.  Ursuline, meanwhile, fell to 5-8-1 and 4-7-1 in conference play.

The Pioneers held a 17-12 advantage in total shots.  However, the Arrows owned a 9-4 edge in shots on goal with Seman totaling eight saves in the contest.

Thursday was Cancer Awareness Night as the Pioneers wore pink socks, held a gift basket raffle and collected donations for the worthy cause.
