Pioneers Fall In Double Overtime To Ohio Valley

The Malone University women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ohio Valley University in double overtime on Thursday afternoon at Canton Central Catholic High School.

The Fighting Scots, who entered the contest as the top-scoring team in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference with an average of 2.9 goals per match, finally broke a 0-0 stalemate in the opening moments of the second overtime period.  OVU's Paula Valbuena scored her ninth goal of the season after gathering in a pass from teammate Konstantina Giannou and launching a long shot from 30 yards out that soared just out of the reach of Pioneer goalkeeper Haleigh Seman.

Ohio Valley stretched its winning streak to five in a row with the victory, improving to 10-1-3 overall and 9-0-1 in the G-MAC.  Malone, meanwhile, slipped to 2-8-2 and 1-8-2 in conference play.

Overall, Ohio Valley held a 15-7 edge in total shots and a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.

The Malone defense held firm through regulation and the first overtime period with Seman notching a total of six saves on the afternoon.

Thursday marked the fifth time this season that the Pioneers have gone to double overtime.  Alexa Langenfeld attempted four shots in the contest, three of which were on goal.  Danielle Lung added two shot attempts.
