Women's Soccer Earns Huge Win

The Malone University women's soccer team earned its first Great Midwest Athletic Conference victory of the season in exciting fashion on Saturday evening as the Pioneers defeated Lake Erie College 4-3 in a double-overtime thriller.

Ashley Price of Lake Erie scored the only goal of the first half. Price's goal came in the 14th minute of play off of a pass from Brett Pauff, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead going into halftime.

Early on in the second half, it was all Pioneers. Just over five minutes into the contest, Kaela Kovanda booted a free kick that sailed over the head of the keeper and into the net, tying the game 1-1.

Just five minutes later, Kassidy Hannum took a shot from the left side of the box. Hannum's goal found the net, giving Malone a 2-1 lead.

In the 79th minute, Lake Erie answered back with a goal by Carley Kandel, tying the game 2-2.

Just four minutes later, Kaela Kovanda answered the bell once more, scoring on another free kick from thirty yards out. Kovanda's second goal of the day gave the Pioneers a 3-2 lead.

Following Kovanda's second goal, with just three minutes remaining in the contest, Holland Erb scored for the Storm sending the game into overtime.

Lake Erie out-shot Malone 5-1 in the first overtime period, but neither team was able to score in the overtime period.

With 90 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Keeley Malley scored the game winning goal to give the Pioneers a 4-3 victory and their first G-MAC win of the season.

Mackenzie Chappell had ten saves in the contest. Kaela Kovanda led the team with three shots, two of which she scored on.

The Pioneers will be back in action at Ohio Dominican University on Thursday, October 5th.
