The Malone University volleyball team picked up its fourth straight victory on Friday evening with a four-set triumph at Alderson Broaddus University.
After dropping the first set 25-21, the Pioneers rallied back for the win by claiming the next three frames by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-22. Friday's triumph gave Malone its fourth straight road victory, marking the first time since 2012 that the Pioneers have won four consecutive matches away from Osborne Hall.
Malone, which registered a season-high 11 aces in the match, improved to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. Alderson Broaddus slipped to 5-8 and 0-3 in conference matches.
Recap
The Pioneers fought back from a 21-16 deficit in the first set, getting as close as 22-21 on back-to-back kills by
Veronica Gehring. Following an ABU timeout, the Battlers regrouped and closed out the frame with a pair of kills and a service ace.
ABU would notch the first three points of the second frame and then extended its advantage to 9-5 before a 10-3 Pioneer surge put the visitors in front 15-12. The Battlers knotted the score at 17-17 but Malone then managed to close out the set by scoring eight of the final 10 points, tying things up at one set apiece.
In the third frame, the Battlers looked to be in command after jumping out to a 20-10 advantage. However, the resilient Pioneers fought back, this time registering 15 of the next 17 points to claim the set 25-22. During a 12-0 run that closed out the set,
Maggie Hamrock served up three aces while
Mallory Adams tallied three kills.
In a back-and-forth fourth set, the Battlers once again were the first team to reach 20 and held a 21-20 lead late in the frame. The ABU advantage would not hold though as the Pioneers managed to put the match away with another strong finish, scoring five of the final six points to take the set 25-22.
For the second straight night and the fourth time this season, Adams posted a double-double, this time with 16 kills and 11 digs. Gehring matched her previous season high with 16 kills. Freshman
Georgia Kiko reached double-digit kills for the first time in her collegiate career as she finished the evening with 12 kills.
Hannah Eliason contributed seven kills and six digs while
Brooklyn Sullivan totaled five kills and three blocks. Setter
Cathryn Miller dished out 31 assists while defensive specialist
Sydney Black tallied a team-high 12 digs. Hamrock and setter
Abbie Swaino each racked up three aces on the night.
Malone will continue its road trip on Saturday afternoon as the team heads to Vienna, West Virginia for a 1:00 p.m. contest against Ohio Valley University.
