Volleyball Tops Ohio Valley To Stretch Winning Streak To Five In A Row

The Malone University volleyball team kept rolling on Saturday as the squad extended its winning streak to five straight with a 16-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-17 triumph at Ohio Valley University.

The Pioneers completed a perfect 5-0 road trip with the victory, improving their record to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference matches.  The five-match winning streak is the longest for Malone since 2012.

Ohio Valley, meanwhile, slipped to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the conference following the defeat.

Recap
The Pioneers held a 10-6 lead in the opening set before OVU charged back, tying the set at 12-12 and then eventually pulling away by registering 10 of the frame's final 11 points.

The hosts led 8-5 in set two before Malone made its move.  The Pioneers pulled in front 12-9 with the help of a pair of service aces from Sydney Black.  The two teams then traded points back and forth and found themselves knotted at 17-17.  Several OVU errors, aces by Black and Veronica Gehring, and kills from Brooklyn Sullivan, Georgia Kiko and Rachel Santos allowed the visitors to pull away for the 25-19 triumph in set two.

Malone opened up a 15-10 edge in set three before the Fighting Scots fought their way back in front, pulling ahead 22-21 late in the frame.  The Pioneers managed to take a 2 sets to 1 lead, though, by notching four of the next six points with the final two MU tallies coming on kills from Hannah Eliason.

The Pioneers then closed out the win in set four, holding the lead from start to finish in the final frame.

For the fourth consecutive match, Gehring reached the 15-kill mark, ending the contest with 15 kills, six digs and three blocks.  Mallory Adams tallied a double-double for the third straight contest and fifth time this season as she posted 11 kills and 16 digs to go along with six blocks and two service aces.

Eliason posted seven kills and three blocks while Santos added five kills.  Setters Cathryn Miller and Abbie Swaino combined for 37 assists and 15 digs.  Libero Maggie Hamrock reached 20 digs for the third time this season while Black recorded three of the Pioneers' 10 aces.

With its lengthy road trip complete, Malone will return to Osborne Hall for a pair of home contests next week.  The squad will face Ursuline College at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Lake Erie College at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
