Pioneer Offense Explodes for Senior Day Victories

The Malone University softball team won a pair of conference games against Alderson Broaddus as they celebrated senior day on Saturday. Malone's offense exploded for 26 hits and 18 runs in the two games, as the team won game one 8-0 in five innings and 10-2 in six innings for game two.

Game One Recap

The Pioneer offense was on fire in game one. Eight batters got at least one hit for the Pioneers, and all nine batters reached base at least once. Four batters for Malone had more than one hit, including senior Allison Mercado. Mercado singled in the first inning for her 100th career hit, and she hit a two-run homerun in the sixth inning as well.

Allyson Gruen pitched a complete game shutout for the Pioneers in game, giving up just three hits in the contest.

Malone's offense was quiet for the first two innings of the game, but made their noise loud and often in the final three innings of the contest.

The team scored two runs in the third, highlighted by a double from Madison Corrick and followed back-to-back singles from Shelby Hulin and Anna Myers.

The Pioneers added three more runs in the fourth inning due to four straight singles from Ashley Beck, Mikayla Fowler, Maria Mokler, and Madison Corrick.

Malone would add on three more runs in the fifth to end the game, highlighted by Mercado's two-run homerun. Emily Beck was hit by a pitch for the second straight at-bat in the sixth inning.

Game Two Recap

The Pioneer offense continued their hit parade through game two, scoring runs in five out of six innings. Madison Corrick, who hit for the cycle on Friday, was just a homerun short of accomplishing the same feat again today. Corrick went 4 for 5 in the contest, with two singles, a double and a triple. She also extended her hitting streak to 18 games in the contest.

Emily Beck, who was the only Malone batter who went without a hit in game despite reaching base twice, went 3 for 4 in game two. Beck hit two doubles and a single in the contest.

Samantha Fruchey pitched a complete game, giving up just one earned run in the 10-2 victory.

The Pioneers scored two runs in the first inning, started by a leadoff triple from Corrick. Corrick scored on a wild pitch. Caley Ritts singled to center, scoring Anna Myers as Malone led 2-1 after the first.

Malone added a run in the second inning and scored two more in the third for the 5-1 lead. Emily Beck led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and Madison Corrick would hit a double as well in the four-hit inning.
