The Malone University softball team split in a double-header with Trevecca Nazarene on Sunday afternoon. The Pioneers took game one by a score of 2-1. The Trojans won game two 3-0.
Â
Game One Recap
Â
Samantha Fruchey had a dominant outing in the Pioneers 2-1 victory. Fruchey pitched a complete game, while giving up zero earned runs and striking out six Trevecca batters on the way. Fruchey's performance brings her record to 3-3 on the season.
Â
After Fruchey and the Pioneer defense kept Trevecca scoreless in the top half of the first,
Ashley Beck hit a two-out solo shot to right field to give Malone the early 1-0 advantage. Beck's homerun was her fifth on the season.
Â
Both teams put up blanks until the Pioneers added to their lead in the fourth inning.
Anna Myers led off the inning with a single up the middle, and would be moved over to second on a
Madison Corrick sacrifice bunt.
Caley Ritts singled up the middle to put runners on the corners for
Emily Beck. Beck answered the bell with a hard hit double that scored Myers and almost got Ritts home from first giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
Â
Trevecca would begin a comeback attempt, scoring a run in the top of the sixth inning to make things interesting. After their run crossed in the sixth inning the Pioneer defense shut the door on the comeback, sitting down six straight batters between the sixth and seventh innings.
Â
Maria Mokler and
Anna Myers each went two for three from the plate in game one. Ashley and
Emily Beck each had one RBI in the contest.
Â
Game Two Recap
Â
Although the Pioneer pitching and defense was outstanding again in game two, the Malone offense could not get things going. Trevecca's Raygn Hall pitched a complete game shutout, while striking out four batters and allowing five hits.
Â
Trevecca got an early 1-0 lead of their own in game two, thanks to a couple of timely hits and great base-running.
Ashley Beck again had a big first inning hit, doubling to right center with two outs in the inning. Beck would advance to third on a wild pitch, but could not find her way across home plate before the end of the inning.
Â
The Trojans added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 3-0 advantage. Four straight Trojan batters were able to get on base by way of two hits, a walk, and a fielder's choice.
Â
Beck's double would be the Pioneers' only hit until back-to-back singles in the fifth inning by
Shelby Hulin and
Madison Corrick. Hulin and Corrick advanced to second and third, but were unable to score in the fifth.
Â
Mikayla Fowler hit a single to center in the sixth and
Madison Corrick hit a single down the left field line in the seventh, but the Pioneer offense could not string any hits together to make a comeback attempt, falling 3-0 in game two. Corrick went two for three at the plate in the game.
